Renewable energy development in Russia in focus of expert discussion at RENWEX 2021
The conference programme of the RENWEX 2021 International Exhibition and Forum for Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles held at Expocentre Fairgrounds was continued today by a series of thematic panel discussions.
The discussions were launched with the Plenary Session on Development of Renewable Energy in Russian Regions: Economic and Technological Aspects. The moderator of the session, Georgy Kekelidze, Chairman of the Board of NP “EUROSOLAR Russia, stressed the importance of this subject. According to him, renewable energy means not only CSAs (capacity supply agreements), but also a set of social and technological matters, issues of the infrastructure development where renewable energy plays a role.
Elena Dmitrieva, Head of the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Department for the Development of Energy Accumulation Systems and RES Equipment, said that the renewable energy industry is being developed in more than 30 regions in Russia today. The country has established the production of RES-based generating equipment for 1.5 GWt per year. The Ministry of Industry and Trade official gave specific examples of RES application in such regions as Kalmykia, the Ulyanovsk and Astrakhan Regions. In particular, the deficit of own generation will be liquidated in Kalmykia by 2022 as a result of the construction of wind-based RES.
The expert said that the Ulyanovsk Region was quick to recognize the need for renewable energy development as strategically important for the region. Today, they use RES as a new point of growth for the whole regional economy. The first wind farm with the capacity of 85MWt was built in Ulyanovsk and a plant for the manufacturing of blades for wind power plants was established there. One more example is the Astrakhan Region. The region is in the TOP 3 leaders in terms of RES construction – 340 MWt of solar plants have already been built there. This figure is planned to be doubled soon.
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for Energy Sergey Esyakov, Director of the Renewably Energy Development Association Alexey Zhikharev and other participants highlighted three aspects of the regional RES policy – retail generation, micro-generation and isolated systems in remote areas. They also discussed other important matters having practical significance for regional renewal energy development.

Lively, interested discussions took place at other thematic sessions that took place on the same day. The coverage of current industry topics was very wide. The prospects for the construction of hybrid complexes were considered in detail by industry experts during a panel discussion on the development of energy infrastructure in remote regions of the Far East and the Arctic using modern renewable energy and thermal generation technologies.
Panel discussions were also held on such subjects as “Prospects of Hydrogen Energy in Russia and the World: the Role of Renewable Energy Sources”, “Renewable Energy Sources: the Power Industry of the Future”, “Solar Power”, “Wind Power: the Current Status and New Directions”.
The exhibition and the forum are still open.
