International Forum “Renewable energy for regional development” started at the RENWEX 2019 exhibition

18 / 06 / 2019

Global trends and new opportunities of renewable energy were discussed at the plenary meeting of the International Forum on Renewable Energy for Regional Development that was opened within the first RENWEX 2019. Renewable Energy and Electric Vehicles international exhibition launched at Expocentre.

The Forum is devoted to the development of RES, first of all, in the regions. The moderator of the plenary meeting Chairman of the Board of NP "EUROSOLAR Russia" Georgy Kekelidze set the Forum's key aim that was to show pilot projects ready for implementation and assist in advancing of R&D in this area.

First Deputy Chairman of the Energy Committee of the Russian State Duma Sergey Esyakov said that renewable energy was the main trend in the development of the global power industry. Investments in this field exceed 300 billion US dollars; over 150 GW of RES capacities are provided every year. And though the rates of growth of renewable energy in Russia still fail to keep pace with global rates, in the Deputy's view, one can say about high potential of the Russian RES market and start of its active mastering. This is evidenced by annual provision of new capacities of solar and wind generation and appearance of large players in the Russian RES market. The Deputy also focused on the shortcomings of existing laws regarding renewable energy including those regulating the retail market of RES.

Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Energy Policy and Energy Efficiency of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Yury Stankevich believes that the RES development prospects should be taken into accout when developing the national energy policy and a long-term energy strategy. He doubts that it is possible to expect fast rates of development of renewable energy in Russia and opportunities of RES to compete with traditional energy sources in the country’s energy balance.

The experience of RES development in Germany was presented by Head of Department of Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of Germany Ulrich Benterbusch. The other participants in the plenary meeting were Managing Director of German Energy Agency (dena) Kristina Haverkamp, representatives of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), leading Russian and foreign energy companies.
